THE CSOD - OUR MISSION

THE CSOD PARTNERS IN "AYITIC GOES GLOBAL"

The genesis of the Caribbean School Of Data was ‘AYITIC GOES GLOBAL’: a collaborative initiative in Haiti that set out to build digital capacities in the field of Information Technology among young women as a means to increase their access to employment in online job markets.

The Caribbean School of Data is a member of the School of Data– a vibrant network of data literacy practitioners, comprising organisations and individuals across Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa.

SCALING DIGITAL CAPACITY BUILDING

WHAT IS THE CSOD?

The Caribbean School of Data (CSOD) is an initiative of the Caribbean Open Institute (COI), that seeks to develop a comprehensive and sustainable ‘digital/data literacy’ programme aimed at underserved populations within the Caribbean, with the goal of building a stronger data culture and creating essential employment skills for the emerging digital economy. CSOD’s pedagogical strategies, training delivery model and base digital literacy curriculum, were developed during the AYITIC Goes Global (AGG) project in Haiti, to address the challenges of scalable digital skills training in resource-constrained environments.

AYITIC Goes Global (AGG) was an initiative in Haiti that encourages women’s involvement in technology and promotes the development of employment opportunities in digital markets.

WHO IS THE CSOD?

The CSOD comprises 4 types of organizations: Funding Partners, Implementation Partners, Training Partners and Employment Partners. Google.org, Google’s philanthropic arm, is the principal funding partner for the CSOD through the TIDES Foundation. The Caribbean Open Institute (COI) is a regional coalition of individuals and organizations that promotes open development approaches to inclusion, participation and innovation within the Caribbean. It functions as a regional hub for the Caribbean within the global Open Data for Development (OD4D) network; with the Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) and Slashroots Foundation (SRFDN) being the principal COI partners implementing the CSOD. The SlashRoots Foundation currently acts as the Grant Manager for the CSOD, while MSBM fulfils the role of Lead Implementation Partner.

WHY WE EXIST

With digital rapidly becoming the dominant mode of interaction for commercial, social and economic activity, resulting in the emergence of what is often described as the Digital economy; Data is the oil that fuels the Digital economy. Digital literacy / Data skills have become an education imperative and a right, no longer a privilege. The CSOD believes in alleviating data poverty across the region and seeks to impact at least 1,500 young men and women, aged 16-30 in seven Caribbean countries.
