This course introduces students to the collection, use and application of open geospatial data. Over two(2) modules students will familiarize themselves with concepts related to geospatial data, the OpenStreetMap platform, and how to produce their own geospatial data. The modules in this course are:
- Mapping Concepts and an Introduction to OSM
- Creating your Geodata
The course seeks to provide training on GIS concepts and its applications in disaster risk reduction. The scope of this initiative will focus on women and girls in SIDS with the aim of building the GIS capacity of the participants and strengthening their resilience to natural disasters.
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- To understand the fundamentals of GIS and its uses in disaster risk management
- To understand hazard vulnerability
- To understand the vulnerabilities of women and girls during natural disasters and learn how to strengthen their resilience.
- To understand disaster and risk management, mitigation strategies and ways of building the disaster resilience capacity of women and girls
- To learn the fundamentals of the HOTOSM platform
Who is this course for?
This course is for persons aged 16 and older with an interest in geospatial data and its applications in disaster risk reduction with a focus on vulnerable groups, specifically women and girls.
What do I need to know?
Participants should have completed the CSOD Basic digital skills Program, or equivalent digital skills training
How long is this course?
The overall Women-Centred Disaster Risk Reduction in SIDS (Haiti) programme is organized over 8 weeks and 2 courses, plus a Capstone. The courses are self-contained, but together they create a learning journey focused on increasing your capacity to apply GIS tools and knowledge to disaster risk reduction. Each self-directed course will take approximately 1.5 – 3 hours per module to complete, and you should be able to complete each course within 2 weeks. The Capstone may take up to 3 weeks to complete with one week being reserved for the final presentations.

Structure of the Course
This course is broken down into two (2) modules, namely:
- Module 1 – Mapping Concepts and an Introduction to OSM: introduces the student to the various elements and attributes that go into constructing a digital map
- Module 3 – Creating your Geodata: is designed to provide learners with advanced knowledge about the OpenStreetMap platform and will include hands-on exercises to help students to start contributing to OSM
You will complete the modules in sequence as you work through the course. Please note that all modules are locked, until the previous one is completed, so you have to completely finish each module and the related assessments in order to progress through the course.
