This course introduces students to the collection, use and application of open geospatial data. Over two(2) modules students will familiarize themselves with concepts related to geospatial data, the OpenStreetMap platform, and how to produce their own geospatial data. The modules in this course are:

  1. Mapping Concepts and an Introduction to OSM
  2. Creating your Geodata

The course seeks to provide training on GIS concepts and its applications in disaster risk reduction.The scope of this initiative will focus on women and girls in SIDS with the aim of building the GIS capacity of the participants and strengthening their resilience to natural disasters.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. To understand the fundamentals of GIS and its uses in disaster risk management
  2. To understand hazard vulnerability
  3. To understand the vulnerabilities of women and girls during natural disasters and learn how to strengthen their resilience.
  4. To understand disaster and risk management, mitigation strategies and ways of building the disaster resilience capacity of women and girls
  5. To learn the fundamentals of the HOTOSM platform
