Keywords and SEO

Keywords are words or phrases that describe content on a website, and can be used to describe images, text documents, database records, and Web pages. For instance, a user may “tag” pictures or text files with keywords that are relevant to their content. Keywords are used to tell search engines and visitors what a website is about in the most concise and accurate way possible and help search engines match a webpage with an appropriate search query.

Relevance is one of the most important ranking factors for Search Engines. They not only detect specific keywords, they also look for clues as to how relevant your content is to a particular search query. In addition to the actual text on your web pages, search engines also examine their structure, the use of keywords in your URLs, the formatting of the page (such as the use of bold font), and which keywords appear in the title and in the body of the text.

For example, a user searching for used cars, may enter “used cars” as their keywords. The search engine will then return Web pages with content relevant to your search terms. The more specific the keywords, the more specific (and useful) the search results will be. Therefore, if a user is searching for a specific used car, and enters something like “Black Honda Accord used car“, a website with those specific keywords will rank very highly in the search results.
