Using TikTok as a Creator

In this topic, we will explore TikTok’s mobile app, which is the platform’s primary interface. TikTok’s web version, with limited functionality, is designed for content viewing rather than content creation and sharing. We’ll delve into the functionalities of the mobile app, allowing you to maximize your TikTok experience and create engaging content on this popular platform.

In your home feed, you’ll see a continuous stream of short videos, one after the other. Scroll up and down to explore the content. The more you engage with videos (liking, sharing, and commenting), the better TikTok’s algorithm will get at showing you content you like.

  • Search for Content: You can use the search bar at the top to search for specific users, hashtags, or content.
  • Browse Profiles: Click on a user’s profile picture or username to view their profile and the videos they’ve uploaded.
  • Like and Share: You can interact with videos by clicking the heart icon to “like” a video and the share icon to share it on other social media platforms.
  • Comment: You can click on the speech bubble icon to leave comments on videos.
  • Follow Users: To follow a user, click the “+ Follow” button on their profile.
  • Explore Discover Page: Click on the “Discover” tab to explore trending hashtags and challenges. You can click on these to see related content.
  • View Notifications: You can access your notifications, messages, and other account-related information by clicking on your profile picture in the top right corner.
  • Customize your profile by adding a profile picture, a username, and a bio that tells viewers about you and your content.
  • Explore, by watching a variety of videos on TikTok to get a feel for the platform and decide what works and what doesn’t for you.
  • Plan your content. Think about the type of videos you want to create. Identify your niche or theme.
  • Practice your editing skills by creating draft content and explore various tools and filters.
  1. Tap the plus (+) button at the bottom of the screen to create a new video.
  2. Record your video, edit it, and use TikTok’s various effects and filters to enhance it. When using for the first time, TikTok will walk you through step-by-step instructions on how to edit video and change audio. Keep in mind the maximum video duration is 10 minutes.
  3. Before recording, you can set a timer, change filters, and alter video speed.
  1. Within the “Home” tab, scroll to the selected content or search using the magnifying glass icon.
  2. To find your friend’s content, click the “Friends” tab and scroll to through the content.
  3. Within the content player, there are six clickable buttons on the right of the screen. These are the user’s profile icon, ‘like this video’ button, ‘comment on this video’ button, ‘saved to collection’ button, ‘share to/send to’ button, ‘audio’ icon. Note the additional features of the following
    i) By clicking the flag icon button, you are able to save this video to your profile to watch later. This is a similar concept like bookmarking a webpage. In the profile tab of your TikTok Account, you can review your saved videos and organize into collections.
ii) By clicking the arrow icon button, you can send the watched content to your friends in the TikTok App or Share to other platforms. The share feature also allows you to download content, duet, stitch, change playback speed or report video.
iii) By tapping the audio icon, you are able to use the sound for your next TikTok Content. You can also ‘add to favourites’ in order to save for future use.
  4. You can engage with another user by liking, sharing and commenting on their content.
  5. Select a mix of these methods to reach a wider audience.
  1. By clicking the arrow-shaped button, you are able to duet the selected content.
  2. Once you initiate the duet, the selected video will appear on one side of the screen, and you’ll be on the other side.
  3. You may change the layout with the following: green screen, left & right, top & bottom, and react.
  4. You can record your part of the duet while the original video plays.
  5. Once you’re finished recording, you can add captions, effects, and filters, and then publish it to your TikTok profile.
  1. By clicking the arrow-shaped button, you are able to stitch the selected content.
  2. Once you initiate the stitch, the selected video will play, and you can start recording your response while it plays in a small inset window on your screen.
