Getting Started with Youtube
If you’re new to YouTube, there are a lot of terms and phrases that may seem a little confusing at first. Reviewing some of the most commonly used terms will give you a better understanding of how YouTube works and what to expect as you get started.
Common YouTube Terms
An Account is where the user can log in to watch, subscribe and organize library videos. The user is able to like, dislike and comment on public video content. However, there are limited channel features to accounts that have not uploaded at least three videos.
A user’s personal or brand-specific space for uploading and organizing videos. This is where he or she publishes and shares content, and interacts with the YouTube community. There are additional features available for Creators who have upload more than three videos and meet a select watch time
Someone who produces and uploads videos to the platform. The Creator will be connected to a YouTube Studio for ease of content editing, content Optimization and creator features
An important dashboard hub for a Creator to track uploaded video content, review analytics, and make changes to existing video titles and description. More recently, YouTube allows the creator to edit video content and make use of their library of copyright free audios and soundtracks
Videos that are currently popular and featured on YouTube’s Trending page
A penalty for copyright infringement, which can result in video removal and account restrictions
A user who follows a channel to receive updates on new videos

The image that represents a video in search results. This can either be creatively designed or selected from a relevant timestamp in the published video

Name given to describe the published video. This ought to be attention grabber or descriptive headline for viewers to appropriate select the recommended video
Text accompanying a video that provides additional information and links. By adding three main hashtags, these will be highlighted below your Video Title as it being watched by an Account user
Interactive elements that can be added to videos. This overlay feature allows creators to utilize a specific timestamp to promote another published video or library and make brief announcements. The overlay will hover over the selected timestamp and prompt the viewer to click for more
A feature used by a YouTube Creator for promoting other videos or content at the end of a video. This is an editable feature which means it can be adjusted even after a video is published
Broadcasting video content in real-time
A feature in live streams that allows viewers to pay to have their messages highlighted
Collection of selected videos organized by a title under a YouTube Account or Channel
Collections of videos organized by theme or topic under a Creator’s Channel
A new feature of YouTube allows vertical video content of 60-seconds in length to be upload and published to the “Shorts” tab of any YouTube Account or Channel
